NR 01 update comes into force in May 2025

New obligation to manage psychosocial risks

As of May 26, 2025, the new wording of Chapter 1.5 of NR 01 is in force, in accordance with MTE Ordinance No. 1,419/2024, which modernizes the guidelines for Occupational Risk Management (GRO). With this update, psychosocial risk factors - such as stress, anxiety, harassment and overload - are now part of the set of occupational risks to be assessed, controlled and documented by companies.

The absence of prevention policies and neglect of mental health will be considered occupational risks and could result in the recognition of a work-related illness. Therefore, companies must fully review their Risk Management Programs (RMP), updating their inventory and recording in detail exposure to psychosocial factors.

In order to comply with the new standard, it is essential to draw up an action plan that includes specific measures, a definition of those responsible, an implementation schedule and prioritization criteria according to the impact on employees. The recommended actions include training, reviewing protocols and conducting preventive analyses.

Collaboration between the legal and occupational health departments is fundamental to ensuring compliance with legal requirements and promoting a healthy working environment. This update is in line with a global movement that values mental health, reinforcing the commitment to safety, the well-being of workers and the quality of internal practices. Failure to comply with the new guidelines could result in sanctions, social security implications and an increase in labor liabilities.
